How to Choose a Diamond Disc for Porcelain and Ceramic Tile

When cutting porcelain or ceramic tile, the finish matters as much as the cut itself. The right diamond disc helps control chipping and gives the installer a cleaner edge for visible work. Start with the tile, the required finish and the machine – not only the disc diameter.

Four checks before choosing

  • Tile and finish: confirm whether the material is porcelain, ceramic tile or another facing material, and whether the cut edge will remain visible.
  • Machine: use only a disc that matches the permitted diameter, maximum RPM, guard and spindle of the machine.
  • Diameter and bore: the disc must fit the machine exactly. Do not alter the bore or install a disc that is not approved for the tool.
  • Product instructions: follow the cutting-mode and use instructions on the individual product page and in the machine documentation.

Why the rim matters

For porcelain and ceramic work, a continuous rim is commonly used where a controlled, clean cut is important. PDT product pages show the rim type, thickness, diameter and bore so the selection can be checked before purchase.

Examples from the PDT range

  • Ceramic Slim 125 mm has a thin 1.2 mm continuous rim for porcelain, ceramic tile and finishing materials.
  • Ceramic Clean Edge 125 mm is listed for dry cutting of porcelain and ceramic tile and for controlled 45-degree mitre cuts.
  • Ceramic Elite Pro 115 mm is intended for precise work in dense porcelain, ceramic tile and finishing materials.

How to reduce damaged edges

  • Support the tile and mark the cut before starting.
  • Let the disc cut at its own pace; do not force the machine through the tile.
  • Inspect the disc before fitting it and use the machine guard and suitable personal protective equipment.
  • For a visible edge, test the chosen disc and method on an offcut before cutting the final tile.

When to ask for help

Use the porcelain and ceramic category to compare the range. For an uncommon machine, a large tile saw, a difficult mitre cut or a material not clearly covered by the product page, send an RFQ with the machine model, disc diameter, bore and tile type.
