How to Choose a Diamond Core Drill for Concrete and Reinforced Concrete

A diamond core drill must be selected by the required hole, the material, the drilling machine and the connection. A core drill for a through hole in reinforced concrete is not the same product as a short dry core drill for a blind electrical opening.

First, identify the drilling task

  • Through holes and longer drilling in concrete or reinforced concrete: use a core drill and machine combination intended for that work. The PDT BSH line is intended for professional drilling in concrete and reinforced concrete; its product pages advise water cooling.
  • Blind holes for electrical accessories: the compact M16 and SDS-plus options are listed for dry drilling with handheld electric drills in concrete and masonry.
  • Required hole size: choose the finished diameter from the approved project or installation requirement. Do not guess a size from the tool alone.

Connection is not a minor detail

Check the machine connection before purchase. The PDT BSH 52 mm core drill has a native 1 1/4″ BSH connection; for the Israeli supply, the product page states that a 1/2″ BSP adapter is included. Do not alter threads or use an unapproved adapter. For compact blind-hole work, compare the 68 mm M16 and 72 mm SDS-plus product pages: they are different connections for different machine setups.

Choose the operating method from the product page

BSH core drills are listed for wet operation, where water cooling helps control heat and segment wear. M16 and SDS-plus versions are listed for dry handheld drilling. Always follow the instructions of the selected core drill and drilling machine; do not transfer a dry or wet method from one connection or product family to another.

Three checks before ordering

  • Confirm the material and whether reinforced concrete is expected.
  • Confirm the hole diameter, required depth and whether the hole is through or blind.
  • Confirm the machine type, connection, permitted operating method and any required water supply.

When to send an RFQ

For a large diameter, a specialist drilling rig, an uncommon connection, recurring heavy drilling or any uncertainty over compatibility, send an RFQ with the machine model, connection, diameter, required depth and material. We will check the appropriate PDT core drill before supply.
