How to Choose a Diamond Disc for Asphalt and Abrasive Materials

Asphalt and abrasive materials can wear a diamond disc quickly. The right first choice depends on the material, the depth of cut, the machine and the wear expected on the job – not on diameter alone.

Identify the material and the job

  • Material: confirm whether you are cutting asphalt, asphalt over concrete, fresh concrete or another abrasive composite. The material below the asphalt can change the cutting load and the required disc.
  • Cutting task: define the required depth, whether the cut is a repair slot or continuous roadwork, and how much cutting is expected per day.
  • Machine: confirm the saw type, power, permitted disc diameter, maximum RPM, guard and bore. A disc must match the complete machine setup.

Why abrasive work needs a different approach

Asphalt, sand-rich concrete and similar materials can remove the bond around the diamond faster than ordinary concrete. PDT asphalt products are presented for abrasive media, but the individual product page must still be checked: no single disc is correct for every asphalt mix, substrate or machine.

Check the disc before ordering

  • Diameter and depth: choose a diameter that gives the required cutting depth and is approved by the machine manufacturer. Do not install an oversized disc to gain depth.
  • Bore and RPM: match the bore exactly and keep the disc’s maximum RPM above the machine’s operating speed. Never modify the bore or exceed the marked limit.
  • Dry or wet method: follow the product page and machine instructions. Do not transfer a wet or dry method from another blade family.
  • Wear and production: for recurring or heavy cutting, compare the expected service interval and send an RFQ when the application needs a special specification.

Working basics

  • Inspect the disc and machine guard before fitting the blade.
  • Mark and support the work, then let the disc cut without forcing the machine.
  • Use suitable personal protective equipment and control dust or water according to the site method.
  • Stop if vibration, unusual noise, glazing or overheating appears, and check the setup before continuing.

When to send an RFQ

Use the asphalt and abrasive-material category to review the standard range. For a large floor saw, unusual bore, deep cut, recurring roadwork, mixed substrate or uncertain compatibility, send an RFQ with the machine model, disc diameter, bore, required depth, material layers, cutting method, quantity and target date.

Quick checklist

Before purchase, confirm the material layers, required depth, machine power, permitted diameter, bore, maximum RPM, dry or wet method and expected workload. Then check the availability label in the catalog. Standard in-stock items can be ordered online; specialist or made-to-order requirements should go through RFQ.
